Car Scribbles

Nearly all Creatives have full time jobs and busy lives so it’s hard to find the time to be creative. This becomes a struggle as you think you’re letting yourself down or maybe you weren’t meant to be an artist (insert your creative here). My days are always busy with the 9-5. I often feel as though maybe I don’t want it bad enough or I’d try harder or quit and go freelance…

So I’m trying to make good use of my hour lunch. I spend it in my car in the parking lot.

The first 15 mins are reading mail, catching up on my social media sites and yes a quick game of candy crush. I then take the next 15 mins and ‘try’ to meditate. Operative word being try, it’s a loud noisy parking lot, I won’t go into to details, you’d thank me 🙂

Then I get myself situated and spend 15 to 20 mins on what I call my #carscribbles sometimes it really is just a scribble other times it looks pretty good. I’ve started trying watercolour too, it’s a bit tough to get angled right in the car & my perspective looks off but it’s still fun.

I know I don’t spend the whole hour but this little bit keeps me sane so when I do have time at home I have #carscribbles in my sketchbooks with lots of ideas to develop.

You have to keep drawing, regardless of whether it’s good or bad just the actual doing keeps your creative spark alight, it makes everything in this crazy world seem right. Try alotting a few minutes at lunch or make good use of those sticky notes.

Redwoods

A few weeks ago my oldest came to me and we got talking about our futures and lack of spontaneity. She’s also a creative person and we have both been neglecting that side and fun! We both laughed about just taking off and doing something crazy. Spend time collecting wild flowers, sketching and journaling. What about Redwoods she says laughing.

So last Friday we hopped a plane and flew to San Francisco then drove 300 miles to Eureka. 22 hours of travel. Soo tired but soo worth it. Warm weather unlike here on east coast.

We had a list of things to see and things we wanted to do like hug a tree, pick 3 flowers, eat organic. The redwoods are breathtaking just walking in the quiet the birds and flowers. We spent Saturday in the woods. Sunday we did the ocean. California reminds me a bit of home. Mountains, cliffs, ocean and forests not to mention the rolling pastures.

We talked about our business idea and took many photos. We flew back Tuesday.

I have to say I felt wonderful. The freedom the fun. So much inspiration. Everyone thought we were crazy, who in their right mind flies to California for a weekend…….We Do!

Sometimes you have to just ‘Live Out Loud’

Zentangle Shmentangle

When I was a kid my dad and I had this great game we played. We would take a piece of paper and very quickly make some squiggly lines that started and ended in the same spot. The rule was you didn’t put any thought into it just do it. We then handed it over to the other person where they would have to create an image within the squiggles. You could add a small item like an eye but no new lines.
You had to be very creative and think fast. It was very freeing and always sparked ideas for a later craft or art project or even a story.
The other part to this game was pattern creating. Oh my gosh zentangle….long before it existed as the ‘new thing’ for creatives. He could’ve made a fortune 😉

I’ve been going back to that free hand squiggle lately, during my lunches I’ve been squiggle crazy and then pulling pieces out and using it to create some simple designs. I have some bigger plans for the simple WIP designs but only after I scan them, some digital work may add what I need.

It’s been a lot of fun going back in time and has brought back so many memories of my dad and growing up in London.

Hooky Day

sketch-smallFor the past few days I have been creating a collection of thoughts and ideas as well as some  quickie sketches into my journal. This is something I take everywhere, which means I will never be able to carry a small handbag, yep I am one of those women with a large bag. In my defence it does have a journal, pencils, markers and rubbers (or if in the US an eraser). I also have wandered around taking photos, this is all in prep for my Hooky Day.

Hooky Day you ask?

The big plan, Taking Monday off work, shhh dont tell…I have this really bad headache….which in layman terms means I just wanna create and desperately need a mental health day!

I could have spent time playing on the weekend, but by the time you finish up the household chores its sunday afternoon.

Got all my stuff, Phone Check, Clicker Check, Laptop Check and a hot cuppa tea, all set have it all next to me, thought I would do some digital stuff using the photos I took and some I already have. I have some great ideas for mashups that I want to use to make tshirt designs. Lion King-Star Wars, DR Who-Labyrinth. Today though I want to combine some photos for a collage.

And here they come, the pets! Between me and the laptop I have 2 cats and behind me on back of chair a medium sized dog that thinks she is a cat. They only want to be next to me when I have plans. I cant draw or use Photoshop well but I cant type around them. So I guess I will let them nap for a bit – maybe I will join them, besides who says you cant nap on a hooky day!

Time Flies – Whoosh!

skull-shirt-image
I realized this morning that summer and fall have gone and we are coming into winter, where did the time go. Time just flies by, what is it that we really do with our time.

I have been working both a FT & PT job for years now, this cuts into creative time. So I bit bullet and quit the PT, yes panic attacks have insued over where the money is coming from to keep afloat, but I am determined. I am giving myself one year to get my Facebook fan page and blog moving, not to mention all the other plans I have for creating & selling my art.

Earlier in the summer I stole a portion of my bedroom for the ‘studio’ which was hard to do as I wanted that clutter free relax zone. So I now have this area that is set up for me to work, all my supplies some inspirational art from artists I enjoy & all infront of a window for light in preparation for my year. Poor space, its been sitting alone since I created it, whoosh….there goes that time flying by again!

I have always wanted to try and build a freelance business and sell both traditional and digital art. So I thought join some of those sites where you can sell your art, why not! I have only joined one as I wanted to see how it all works, I went for RedBubble. My first foray was well, less than great. The design was solid but on a Tshirt haha, just didnt look right…..back to the drawing board, or is that digital board. All my time has been on the computer creating digital work and uploading for sale. Which would be great if I sold anything. Whoosh!

So yesterday I created another digital piece and uploaded, lets see how this one works. The kids think it looks good. I did it as Tshirt and iPhone case http://www.redbubble.com/people/suisiadh-3gaels/works/11045114-rainbow-skull?p=iphone-case

Time has flown by and now its almost the end of this year, leaving me 10 Months. I have to be more conscious of what I am doing, create a daily to do, dedicate each evening to one thing. Monday-Blog, Tuesday-? and so on….whoosh whoosh, darn I just lost another 20 minutes staring at the TV.

T Sketch

Well didn’t get much done this week. Had to have a ‘procedure’ so couple days no food etc. too tired but back to it next week.
But this sketch I did of my teen T I had already finished. I think I captured her pretty well. This was her first dance and she was all dressed up. In this shot she’s looking up while playing with her new hoop earrings.
I love drawing family, you know there little quirks so trying to capture those are a bit tricky, its funny because you can see them in the drawing, but not everyone captures it. Those that know you well see it.

Fuzzy Butt the Dog

Here is my attempt at our family dog that we lovingly call fuzzy butt. Of course after her last grooming she isnt so fuzzy. Holly is part Pug and Part Cocker. She can be a handful, but also quite the lover.

I used Strathmore paper and just a couple of graphite pencils, 5H to lay it out and then HB, 2B and 5B for all of the shading.

I did like the way this turned out, I may at a later date go back and add in some charcoal for the darker areas, but we will see.

So here is the final next to the photo.
