The Big Move to Studio

Oops I’ve been neglecting everything lately. My oldest pushes me if I’m lazy but she has just moved out, which makes me very sad and very happy. This left her room all empty and lonely, what to do, what to do? A Studio!

My way of coping was to have a massive clean out. I did say massive right! I have systematically gone through my whole house. If I haven’t used it in a few months then I must not need it. Of course I don’t think I have been as aggressive as I could have or should have been. I still have a few small areas but wore myself out over the past couple of weeks.

Now for her room. I have been doing my digital art on my lap on the settee and my pastels on a makeshift table in kitchen, (when not procrastinating) yes I know eeww. Just a tad hazardous but we don’t actually use the kitchen except as a walk through to the other rooms. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. One more thing on my to do agenda, have an eat in kitchen.

Took awhile but I now have everything art and almost everything craft in her space. Wow! Is this a small room no wonder she moved lol! I’ve done some organizing but it does need much more. I have a window that overlooks the river that runs in the backyard. The noise from water is relaxing. Lots of light and good feeling, inspiration hanging on walls. As you can see it’s a work in progress.

Since completing this big shake up I have one excuse after another to not turn on the laptop or climb the stairs to the studio. Even my knitting is sitting staring at me and that’s on the settee.

Got to get bum in gear, can’t be a full time artist, designer if the bum is firmly planted on the settee.

So facebook hasn’t been updated nor any of my Tshirt sites like society6 or RedBubble I haven’t drawn, painted or designed.

So a big hike and a SciFi movie this weekend and I am feeling the mojo slowly move back in woot woot!

Amusement Park Collage

I’ve been quite under the weather lately. Sore throat, ears, sinus and a cough which I think I’ve managed to bruise something doing. Instead of getting better I’ve gotten worse, but think I am finally on mend.

In effort to feel a bit more cheery I looked at some of the photos from my holiday to Florida at the end of last year. The trips to amusement parks in particular. Then it hit me how would those parks look combined, take pictures of the parks and put them all together as one.

So I took some of the photos from Sea World, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Epcot and Magic Kingdom I then took sections of each of the photos and lay them on top of each other in photoshop.

Using photoshop (one of my favourite pieces of software) and my Intuos I carefully blended the photos together using layer masks. I moved them around and tried different placements for each piece. I love the way the turrets come out of the rocks and waterfall. This gave me my own magical kingdom. A place that’s fantasy and where animals can just wander freely.

Digital Portrait

20140116-113136.jpg
I have been trying to hone some of my digital skills. I have never really done a portrait digitally. So I have this photo I grabbed online of David Bowie as the Goblin King from The Labyrinth movie and thought I would use it as my inspiration. Love that movie…dont you.

I am using an old version of PS CS2 and an Intuos graphics tablet. All done on my old laptop which is really feeling it’s age when I work. Like me it’s having memory and processing issues, I feel it’s pain. I started to lay down some base colours and lines, using very faint colours. I had about 20 layers and as I get to a point where it looks okay, say on the eyes I will flatten some of it down so there are not too many layers.

As I move forward I just keep adding colour and shadow, highlights. Trying to get all of the facial features. I am at a good point, it looks like Bowie. This weekend I will be adding some of the finer details. I was thinking it might make a good print or if I come up with a tag line/text a card.

What do you think. Any feed back is welcome.

Hooky Day

sketch-smallFor the past few days I have been creating a collection of thoughts and ideas as well as some  quickie sketches into my journal. This is something I take everywhere, which means I will never be able to carry a small handbag, yep I am one of those women with a large bag. In my defence it does have a journal, pencils, markers and rubbers (or if in the US an eraser). I also have wandered around taking photos, this is all in prep for my Hooky Day.

Hooky Day you ask?

The big plan, Taking Monday off work, shhh dont tell…I have this really bad headache….which in layman terms means I just wanna create and desperately need a mental health day!

I could have spent time playing on the weekend, but by the time you finish up the household chores its sunday afternoon.

Got all my stuff, Phone Check, Clicker Check, Laptop Check and a hot cuppa tea, all set have it all next to me, thought I would do some digital stuff using the photos I took and some I already have. I have some great ideas for mashups that I want to use to make tshirt designs. Lion King-Star Wars, DR Who-Labyrinth. Today though I want to combine some photos for a collage.

And here they come, the pets! Between me and the laptop I have 2 cats and behind me on back of chair a medium sized dog that thinks she is a cat. They only want to be next to me when I have plans. I cant draw or use Photoshop well but I cant type around them. So I guess I will let them nap for a bit – maybe I will join them, besides who says you cant nap on a hooky day!

Time Flies – Whoosh!

skull-shirt-image
I realized this morning that summer and fall have gone and we are coming into winter, where did the time go. Time just flies by, what is it that we really do with our time.

I have been working both a FT & PT job for years now, this cuts into creative time. So I bit bullet and quit the PT, yes panic attacks have insued over where the money is coming from to keep afloat, but I am determined. I am giving myself one year to get my Facebook fan page and blog moving, not to mention all the other plans I have for creating & selling my art.

Earlier in the summer I stole a portion of my bedroom for the ‘studio’ which was hard to do as I wanted that clutter free relax zone. So I now have this area that is set up for me to work, all my supplies some inspirational art from artists I enjoy & all infront of a window for light in preparation for my year. Poor space, its been sitting alone since I created it, whoosh….there goes that time flying by again!

I have always wanted to try and build a freelance business and sell both traditional and digital art. So I thought join some of those sites where you can sell your art, why not! I have only joined one as I wanted to see how it all works, I went for RedBubble. My first foray was well, less than great. The design was solid but on a Tshirt haha, just didnt look right…..back to the drawing board, or is that digital board. All my time has been on the computer creating digital work and uploading for sale. Which would be great if I sold anything. Whoosh!

So yesterday I created another digital piece and uploaded, lets see how this one works. The kids think it looks good. I did it as Tshirt and iPhone case http://www.redbubble.com/people/suisiadh-3gaels/works/11045114-rainbow-skull?p=iphone-case

Time has flown by and now its almost the end of this year, leaving me 10 Months. I have to be more conscious of what I am doing, create a daily to do, dedicate each evening to one thing. Monday-Blog, Tuesday-? and so on….whoosh whoosh, darn I just lost another 20 minutes staring at the TV.

T-Shirt Trials

I am still playing in the digital world. Practicing with my tablet. I really like it but the brush doesn’t really work like I feel or expect it should. Online tutorials don’t really cover it well. They are all speed tutorials, don’t know about you but at my age, nope brain doesn’t run in fast mode.

After several attempts at some mash up ideas I decided to set up a RedBubble account. I have uploaded a few things but no sales. For those that don’t know you can upload your art to RedBubble and people can buy it as iPod cases, posters, cards and t-shirts.

I have only done cards and prints till recently. So I finally uploaded my first t-shirt design, ha I was so bloody tickled. My kids kept laughing at me I was so excited. It looked great on the computer and print I made the idea was a good one.

I ordered my shirt and waited, and waited till it finally arrived. The excitement vanished in about 2 seconds flat. Wait, that can’t be my design…….can it ! It didn’t translate well to a shirt. I have some great ideas but maybe my execution is erm, lacking 😉

But on an awesome note, I learned a bit more about how this works what looks good and sizing of the images. And I wore my shirt to GraniteCon and the ‘idea’ went well. So back to laptop and tablet and rework

After all practice makes perfect.

Art Day

So today’s plan, as I have 3 whole days off, yes that noise you heard was me screaming with delight! ART!
Art Art and more Art…..I decided to work digital today…..so out came the laptop and my new toy, intuos5 (must come up with a good name for it) and of course the most important item, a good cuppa rosy lea (tea for those unfamiliar with cockney) I just can’t work without it. The youngest child has decided to join me and also be creative today.

It’s been about 5 hours now and alas no art, why you ask? well, I have been sabotaged by the PC. Most of my time today has been spent copying deleting defragging running security and anti spyware programs. I…am…exhausted, and any creative juice is gone, empty like my tea cup, someone put the bloody kettle on. Please.

There is a lot to be said for traditional arts, the only thing that gets in your way is time and maybe space.

It’s now late afternoon and the system scan is still running. And what became of the youngest you ask, I can see her tapping away at her laptop big smile. As I get up to see what she’s accomplished she whoops out loud, all the animals jump “level 90” ‘sigh’ she’s been playing WoW all day 🙂
