Moving

For a while now I’ve wanted my website and blog to be in same place. So finally I have done this. All the posts from here were finally moved over to the website.

I don’t know if the new posts will show for you I’m still figuring things out. So if you’d still like to follow along on the journey check it out at 3Gaels Art

Thank you everyone for all the comments and support over the past few years.

Yarn Frenzy

I haven’t done much art lately. I’ve done a few things which I will post soon but I’ve kinda been in that whole cold weather blah thing. Happens every year, and I get this curl up on couch and knit syndrome. As a rule I work on one thing nothing big but it keeps my hands busy.

 Except this year.…

I went on this yarn frenzy I have piles of the stuff. I could start my own store. So I came up with a small goal. Do more than one project and actually finish them! I thought I’d get one or three? things done especially if I do toddler items (small and quick) but no….I couldn’t stop. Which is why my house is messy, art isn’t done and the animals are giving me that look 😉

So here’s my list and I still can’t believe I actually have done all of this.

1 toddler dress. 6 toddler pullovers. 1 girls tank. 1 afghan and one in progress. 4 hats. 1 lacy pullover for me. 3 cat toys & 1 in works. 1 Baby blanket. 2 pullovers missing a sleeve I ran out of that colour yarn eek!

Still have a few projects left to complete. I may not have been painting but the ideas that this goal sparked were great. I even came up with an idea that I’ll keep in my notebook for now. I have to create one first to see if I like it or can even do it.

Did you have any winter goals or frenzies?

Realism Challenge

Last week during a visit to the local bookshop I found a book by Mark Crilley. I follow Mark in both YouTube and Instagram. He has some great tutorials on YouTube. The book is tutorials on realistic drawings.

 1 torn paper
So I’ve decided to do one a day during my lunch break. It’s good practice for me to keep drawing I get great hints and tips plus I get outside in the fresh air and away from that horrid cubby well it’s really a soul sucking cubby but I’m thinking positive 😉

 2 folded paper
I have only done 3 so far and I am thoroughly enjoying it. I can’t wait to do more.

Spring Stuff

it was a very long winter this year. The kind that never ends, the kind where you close down and shut yourself in doors waiting for it all to end, I didn’t get much done including writing.

Spring hit and everyone started buzzing around then all of a sudden I looked at a calendar and it’s almost July oops nothing written still. Where did my time go.

It has been spent outside as much as possible to make up for lost time with that winter. We started a ‘urban’ veggie garden this year. My daughter and I built beds. Cabbage, toms, tatties, peas not to mention the watermelon,  blackberries, strawberries and the orange tree and kiwi. Poor kiwi though, it’s a girl and apparently they need a boy for fruit.

I’ve done a lot of crochet too, have a baby blanket started as well as a cardigan, large blanket, summer top and baby booties. As I said long winter and there are a lot of babies coming lol! I tried to get some sketching in mostly at work on stickies. Did start a rough sketch of oldest.

I also joined the Oatley Academy #OALive. Looking forward to working on a real project and moving my dream forward. The older I get the less patience I have in slowly moving toward my dream of freelance, you would think we would have more patience as we age.

Well that’s the quick review of my time after winter. Lots of stuff going so lots of things I can write about. Updates on the fruits and veggies, and I’ll tell you about my personal project soon.

In the Pink

I have always had an issue with coloured pencils; I just couldn’t get the colours or the blending right. So it’s been my mission lately to keep working with them to refine my craft and learn other mediums. I have seen so many wonderful images done in coloured pencil that I really want to learn to create beautiful images, not to mention it’s soo easy for travel compared to Pastels. I also want to create more work so that I have something to offer when I finally finish setting up my Etsy store, as part of the point of all of this is to start a good freelance Art and Design Studio.

I choose 2 projects to work on. I took this great photo with my iPhone, I wish it had been with my trusty camera I would of had more pixels to work with for a print but alas like me its age is showing and it has decided it’s time, ‘sigh’ ‘sniff’ ‘sniff’.

Project one…..To recreate this image with pencil. I used Canson Pastel Paper because it has two sides rough and smooth, I used the smooth, white. I pulled the pencils needed and using my phone with the reference photo set to work. I knew I didn’t have all of the colours so this is where trying the blending was going to come in. I loved the fact I could sit on the couch in front of the TV with a cuppa rosy and work on this project. I spent some time each evening and this is what I came up with. I really like it; it didn’t come out quite as bad as I was thinking it might, per my previous forays into the coloured pencil realm.

What’s in a Name

Suisiadh 3Gaels Art Studio
3Gaels logo

I often get asked what does Suisiadh 3Gaels mean and where did I get the name for my studio.

It was a long process and I’ve had many names over the years, it’s one of those things that takes forever or at least it did me, but that could be because each time I started up my freelance design and art I would give it up for the day job dollars being a single parent that came first, so with each restart came a new name iteration. How about you, have you needed to come up with a name and just struggled with it?

A long time ago when the kids were ‘wee bairns’ I toyed with the name ‘Imortl Designs’ © and the tag line of ‘for designs that last’. Then after a few years when the kids were older and I could see how creative they were and how we enjoyed doing things together I thought WOW, wouldnt it be great if we worked together. This mum had great plans.

words
Sooo…….now you’re asking where does the name come in? I am a Scot, well half, I was born in London and my mum was from Motherwell Scotland. So after I tried lot’s of versions of 3 something’s, which didnt really work, I went with something to do with England or Scotland and finally it hit me; 3 Girls from Gaelic decent 3Gaels – I like word play. There it was the name, but once again life bellowed and my children didnt seem interested in working with their mother 🙂 so I put it aside.

Then came the cancer it changes how you think, yes kids come first but so does doing what makes you happy, yes i’m going for it again, I really want to be succesful in my art, I can hear it now ‘not another name change’ this time I just used my first name and used the Gaelic spelling Suisiadh, I was happy with it. So this is what I have been using for awhile now, its how I sign all my art work. Funny thing, no one can pronounce it, kids thought it might cause an issue with marketing. So I added the 3Gaels back because in all honesty I cant pronounce it either, maybe when I was younger and family spoke the odd gaelic at home, alas no longer.

The name is now Susan’s 3 Girls……Suisiadh 3Gaels! This one is the winner and thats whats in a name.
